Tommy's Tale : A Novel by Alan Cumming
Tommy's Tale by Alan Cumming is apparently semi-autobiographical which explains why Alan Cumming has banned his mother from reading it. Tommy is a photographers assistant, a job with such limited responsibility (at least the way Tommy does it) that he is more or less free to indulge his every hedonistic desire. All the drink, drugs and sex that Tommy can get his hands on, he indulges in. Which perhaps explains the writing style of Alan Cumming which is meandering and extremely chatty, like in fact he is telling the story as he remembers it after the pub with a joint or two circling the room.
Tommy, for all his sins, is a decent guy who through the pages of the book slowly grows up and in the end welcomes his twin fears of commitment and adulthood. This is a decadent, introspective and funny book that made me empathise, sympathise and laugh.
