Via Simon Willison a Wired News story The New Diamond Age which explains how two US companies (Gemesis and Apollo) have independently, and using different methods, cracked methods for creating less expensive, mass produced diamonds equal or superior in quality to mined diamonds.

If the gems are indistinguishable then does it make a difference where they originate? Only in so far as with diamonds grown recently you can be assured of their origin, you can know that the diamond that you give as a symbol of love has not contributed to human suffering.
