Big Day Out At The Green 2003

Recently returned from Glasgow having been at Big Day Out At The Green 2003 where the line-up was; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, P J Harvey, The Distillers and Electric 6. It was a beautiful sunny day in Glasgow and even with a hangover from Saturday night the day was excellent.

Outstandingly great were QotSA and especially RHCP who were on top form. Foo Fighters were a bit shitty I thought, I don't like PJ Harvey at the best of times and the others were OK. An amusing rule of the day was, "Crowd Surfing and Moshing are extremely dangerous and may result in eviction without refund." It didn't amuse a friend of mine though when he had to listen to the Chili's from outside Glasgow Green. Anyway, that's why I haven't posted for a few days.

I don't know what this site is all about, but i came across it accidentally. I had to write a comment after reading Paul's comment on Big Day Out At Glasgow Green. I was there too, and i think Paul's comments are surely a joke. Either Paul doesn't know very much about what makes good music, or he's a QOTSA and Chili Peppers fan, and obviously biased. The best performances were easily from P J Harvey, and Foo Fighters, who both played amazing sets, whether fully appreciated by the audience (mostly made up of impatient Chili Peppers fans) or not. Electric Six were also surprisingly good, definitely a highlight of the day. Red Hot Chili Peppers admittedly played amazing music, very impressive, but I think they should have played more of their classics and popular songs. Especially considering that people had spent all day waiting to see them play. Queens Of The Stone Age were a real let down. I was looking forward to them, but thought their performance was the most forgetable of the day. Distillers were only there to fill a space really, and i guess they did that. So...in my opinion, the order of greatness from greatest to crappest is P J Harvey (I am a fan, so I would say that, but I truly believe her performance was something special, and she deserved more attention), Foo Fighters (wasn't particularly looking forward to them, but they were stunning), Electric Six (very, very big surprise, expected singles and a few shitty songs, but they really got the crowd going, had so much energy, and the music was ace), Chili Peppers (bit of a disappointment), QOTSA, Distillers. Anyways, just my opinions, it was a good day anyway, fantastic sun, and mostly fantastic music (but shitty queues).

You're probably right on both counts, I don't know much about music *and* I'm a chili's / qotsa fan! Nice of you to comment though! It was cool to hear some less famous stuff from the chili's, even if the whole crowd didn't know it. I have to admit I'm just not very fond of PJ Harvey and the Foo Fighters but it's my web site so I'm allowed to be completely and totally biased :-) The Foo Fighters did have amazing support in the crowd I thought. The day was cool fun though, the sun was a huge bonus but there was no need for the massive queue's for everything. By the end of the day I just wanted to be stretchered out of there. Thanks for visiting my site, and even more thanks for bothering to comment on it!

skin cancer sming cancer!!!!! I thought the Foo's were ace!!!! as well as the rest of the bands, electric six surprised me, i thought they were gonna be crap but they were cool!! It was a great day though!

Posted by: Steph at August 29, 2003 07:45 AM

Foo Fighters were immense!! Mainly went for RHCP as I'm a huge fan and I've seen them once this year already. Wasb't overly impressed with QOTSA but the two main acts certainly didn't dissapoint.

What are u on about RHCP should have played more classic/popular songs- by far and away their most popular albums were Californication and By the Way and the bulk of their set was based on these with loads of tracks from other albums as well!

All in all a blinding day though- 14 of us flew up from Cardiff and had a great night out the Saturday and despite the hangovers, the concert didn't dissapoint. Even had time for a spot of Karaoke Delilah in some dodgy pub after the gig!

Posted by: Leon at August 29, 2003 04:49 PM

stop talking shit! The chilis played their most popular songs that everone knew among others and were brilliant as were the foos and qotsa and in my opinion pj harvey were utter crap i would of had more fun watchin paint dry!

What can i say the day was amazing! Highlight was definately seeing dave grohl so close. Foo's and Chili's were absolutely amazing. Nice suprise from electric six and gay bar was a big hit!!! Have to say qotsa where a let down. They played a lot of new stuff no-one knew and the atmosphere wasn't at it's best when they were playing. PJ Harvey, BORING !!!! Bring it on foo's and chili's !!!!!!!!!

Posted by: caroline at August 29, 2003 08:33 PM

it was fucking AMAZING!!! it was all really great, part from PJ Harvey, and i was in the 3rd row from the stage (don't hit me, lol), so i got a real good view too.
Foo Fighters had to be the best performance :)

What was with the throwing of plastic glasses full of beer/water/piss? Is that normal behaviour? I got soaked several times.

Chili's rule & Anthony Kiedis has to be one of the sexiest men alive :) .... i was impressed!

Posted by: Jules at August 30, 2003 12:03 AM

it was a great day, i was totally knackered, and still buggered as i'd been out all night, then when i got there, i was pleasantly surprised about most of the early bands, the only band of which i thought were bad was the distillers, after some more boozing etc. i was over the moon to hear good sets from pj harvey, electric 6 (how good was radio gaa gaa?!), the qotsa and the foos and chillis, an all out great day i'll never forget with great people, and drink!, was an invasion of all you englishmen!! hope u all enjoyed yourselfs as much as i did!!!!

Posted by: gav at August 30, 2003 05:22 PM

The red hot Chili Peppers are gods after that performance they were fantastic the foo fighters, queens of the stone age ,electric six and distillers were all brilliant too the only downfall of the day was pj harvey as she was crap if she cracked a smile ( or grin she would have cracked her face the only good part of her set was when she bent over) the CHILIS RULE i cant wait too see then again

argghhh, you people.... "rhcp should have played more of their classics and popular songs" erm excuse me but what about the rhcp before they COMMERCIALISED their music. a lot of their older stuff that isn't "famous" has far greater meaning and more of the essence of what i think the rhcp are really about. its a shame it really is, that people seem to claim they absolutely love the rhcp yet when it comes down to it, they only really like the tunes that have made the top ten or whatever it happens to be these days.
did you people not listen to the queens of the stone age or something, musically they played a phenomenal set, it was extremely "tight" and even if you dont like their stuff, anyone that has an inkling about music would have been able to appreciate that they are very talented.
i went mainly to see the rhcp but i was disappointed because they played, what i thought, too much of the stuff that people wanted to hear, not perhaps what they wanted to play. mellowship in slinky b major and sir psycho sexy were the best songs they played.
tis funny how most people just dont have a clue.

Posted by: yellow at August 31, 2003 12:32 AM

Hello again. For those people who appear to have misread my first comment, my comments about the Red Hot Chili Peppers were purely my own opinions. As I'm not a fan, i personally would have prefered to hear more of the songs I knew of (ie. the commercial ones). So for me, they weren't a highlight, but I did mention that I thought they played brilliantly, i was well impressed. I think the fact that they played an hour and a half set at the end of a long day, it was all too much for me to properly enjoy anyway. As for Queens of the Stone Age, i admit I would have probably prefered their set if I'd heard more of their stuff beforehand. I think it's difficult to fully appreciate good music when hearing it for the first time live. Anyway, QOTSA sounded a bit too heavy for my personal liking, but that says nothing about their talent as musicians. So...don't be grumpin' with me, it really was just my selfish thoughts on the day. Glad everyone else enjoyed themselves too, no matter who you were there to see.

Posted by: jilly c at August 31, 2003 01:59 AM

i agree that they should have played there older stuff a bit more from such albumbs as mothers milk and freeky styley but they still were a great show and the best set there

Posted by: Kevin at August 31, 2003 03:46 PM

for me the chilis are one of the best bands ive come accross both on cd and live, would of liked to of heard more of the chilis older stuff too possibly they didnt play any stuff from mothers milk as i read that frusciante hates it and refuses to play anything from it! sir psycho sexy was the best of the set for me personally although i would of liked to hear breaking the girl live. Foos rocked even though the idiot brigade came out and i got punched in the face by an arm waving loon QOTSA disapointed me a bit - didnt recognise much, pj harvey - no comment (zzzzzzz), electric 6 rocked and the for most of the distillers me and my friend were in the discussion as to whether the lead singer was a he or a she. for me in all well worth the daily round trip of 400 miles from middlesbrough.

Posted by: bob at August 31, 2003 05:01 PM

What does it matter if Chilis played old stuff or new stuff as long as it rocked. Appreciate a lot of their older original stuff was the biz but people need to move on and get a life. If Chilis were still stuck in the past playing their old stuff they would never have been headlining and we wouldn't be having this debate! Oh and Anthony Kiedis is the sexiest man alive!

Posted by: diane at September 1, 2003 10:04 PM

Have totally got to agree with yellow, are you fuckers deaf. QOTSA were out off this world, tight, musically fantastic and with attitude thrown in for free.

lol - glad to hear the opinions of well educated music fans for a change! Thanks for that Gary

Posted by: at September 6, 2003 01:16 AM

Firstly, agree anthony kiedis is a god! Secondly, "soaking" spesh with water was a godsend considering the sun. QOTSA played an amazing set, as did all but pj harvey, sorry but she was uninspiring and dull, the only time we left the (front) pit! Loved watching the sunset over the crowd, got some amazing phone pictures, a day to remember, bring on next year! Ps, if any of you are that girl that kept screaming if ANYONE walked on stage, please don't ever do that again! Pps if you're the girl that got ALL FOUR FUCKING RHCP SETLISTS, don't be so tight! Ppps, not "hard core" RHCP fans, but knew ALL tunes :P Pppps, we're not as cocky as we sound! x

can i just say that anthony kiedis is so stunning!i love him so much!chilis beat all the other bands outta the park they where so much better than any of the rest of em(only my opinion)foos were good so were electric 6 and qotsa. pj harvey and distillers sucked.rock on the chilis and long may they live!!!!i think that the chilis setlist was fantastic would have liked them to play me and my friends or fire but loved it never the less!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: jenpen at September 9, 2003 05:15 PM

i was thought it was feckin magic! me n a load of mates were there n it rocked. does it matter who was actually the best? everyone likes sumthin different! gay bar was soo good but 4 me it was the foos in the chilis that were amazin! and does anyone else think dave grohl n anthony kedis are just THE fittest??!! :)

Posted by: soph at September 10, 2003 03:35 PM

It was amasing, i am still in awe of the chili peppers they were brilliant. They were high light of the day, they really got the crowd going, even after most of the crowd was tired, hot and if you were like me extremely sunburnt. I did feel that QOTSA could have been better but the foos were great aswell.
I didnt really pay much attension to the distillers or pj harvey but they made great background music.
Oh and yes i totally agree dave and anthony are extremely fit.

I was a concert virgin until Big Day Out... I just think it was amazing to actually see people like Dave Grohl and Anthony Kiedis in person! You forget that they're just ordinary, living people like the rest of us. For me, the highlight was the RHCP... my legs were agony from standing in the same place for 10 hours but when they came on, I soon forgot the pain. The Foos were amazing too, I loved the atmosphere... it was so good hearing them play Breakout! QOTSA - not really my kind of music but I did go crazy when they played No One Knows, luv that song. Electric Six were a lot of fun - it rocked that they played Queen :D PJ Harvey... bit of a yawn. Distillers... bleh.. all their songs sounded the same to me. Oh, one more thing... is it just me, or did Flea have a hard-on when he came on for the finale playing the trumpet?

Posted by: Zara at September 16, 2003 04:21 PM

Speaking as the girl who held onto the front barrier for 11 hours, without eating, or going to the toilet, wanna say that the distillers and pj harvey should have had rocks thrown at them, electric 6 were more attractive than expected, qotsa were fuckin amazing, dave grohl smiled at me,chili peppers couldnt have played better songs, the old stuff is blatently the best, i bet i have better photos than all of you and i touched chad smiths drum stick...

Posted by: Nicky at September 18, 2003 01:31 PM

It was a great day, great music, sun was shining, couldnt have asked for more. RHCP were the highlight for me, doesnt matter whether it was their old or new stuff they would have rocked anyway! Felt sorry for Pj Harvey I do like her but she was a bit out of place in the line up. Got a new appreciation for QOTSA they were tight and The Foos were class. Electric six were fab (esp Radio Ga Ga)but no comment on Distillers I missed them! Bring on next year

Posted by: Laura at September 23, 2003 06:47 PM

Nice to read some new stuff on the Day Out. I was there; with my Mum, Dad, Sis and daughter. A Family affair. The samll person Flea thanked was my daughter!!
Zara, you weren't seeing things, Flea's trumpet seemed to make him so happy you could see it in his trousers!
Nicky, I hope your photos make you as happy as mine make me. We were second row from the front and it was bloody brilliant.
RHCP were the highlight of my day, I'd waited 11 years to see them. Foos were fantastic also and Electric 6 rocked. QOTSA were arrogant, Distillers passed the time and PJ Harvey was, well its nice to say I've seen her!?!
Anthony and Dave are yummy but Flea's the man for me!!

Posted by: Min at October 2, 2003 10:04 PM

k, wot kinda sick joke was PJ Harvey? have any of you ever heard such crap in your lives? distillers were alright, me and my friends had a good time tryin 2 decide if the signer was male or female. electric six were great. QOTSA were brilliant, the foo's were amazing and the chilis were outstandin. they made ma year. only one complaint was that i got sunburnt!

Posted by: Kewi at October 4, 2003 09:24 PM

The foos were definatley the best.
QOTSA were crap live and Nick Olivieri was disappointing.
PJ Harvey had about 30 guitars and every one of them was wasted on her three chord knowledge.
Electric Six has the hottest bassist in the world( but radio gaa gaa was crap)
The Distillers were good considering the fact that a)no one was listening and b) no one cares about them anyway.

It was one hell of a day out.

If your name is Dustin or Will and you were standing at the right hand side of the stage talking/fighting with three girls, could you mail me please!

Hey guys Im 14 and this was my first Rock festival.
I mainly went to see Foofighters and chilis

But then the list of names grew bigger. I didn't see the distillers. I was excited about electric six but most of them have left and theres no sax in High Voltage! I personally don't like PJ Harvey and although her songs were quite good until she said "It's very Hot today" and she got someone to put suncreme on her legs. QOTSA Were really good and funny. Foo fighters are my favorite band and I saw them at london late last year. I got 4 rows from the front. They had a great set but they didn't play Generator, Hey Johnny Park or any songs from their first album. The chilis were amazing and rattled through songs. although you could sence they were their for the money because anothony didn't say anything at the end. And they should have stopped after Under the Bridge. Foo fighters were the best then, chilis, Qotsa, Electric six then PJ harvey. This was one of the best days of my life ill never forget it. Oh and did any of u guys see the dude dressing up as the cab driver in the by the way video?

All you guys that were slagging off Queens of The Stoneage obviously have no musical knowledge!! They were fuckin amazin!! I LOVE JOSH HOMME!! he was soo good and sooo hot!! Foo's and Chilli's were also pretty good...Electric six made me laugh...and what was with The Distillers and PJ Harvey, they were absolute shit! I can't wait till next year and hopefully QOTSA, Foo's and Chilli's will return!!

Twas a very good day indeed. Chilis were immense as usual - its when you see them live you really do appreciate that they are true musicians. All the classics, plus some new stuff. No Universally Speaking, but I saw that in March so I'm not complaining. Foos played a blistering set. One sing a long after another - no time to catch your breath in between! The first 5 or 6 songs all linked in brilliantly and Grohl entertained the crowd as usual. Queens were good but not the best. I missed No One Knows and Feel Good Hit of the Summer cos I was in the first aid tent with someone who fainted, but I still heard them. But they walked right past the tent so I got to see them really close up. So I got out my camera incase anyone else decided to walk past. And sure enough, it was the Chilis! So got a good photo of em and managed to get a "Hi" from Anthony, to which a secuirity guard stole my camera (he gave it back after some persuasion) and chucked me out the tent. Ah well. Electric Six were a definite highlight. Hilarious performers on stage and some amusing lyrics to go with it (I recently bought their album as a result). Didnt like PJ Harvey, mainly cos I dont really know her songs. Bit of a wooden performance. Distillers were average, only knew one song so again not exactly a fan. All in all, a totally ace day and bring on Big Day Out '04!

Posted by: Alfie at October 27, 2003 01:34 PM

the foo fighters were fu*kin' SWEET, they certainly blew me away...... and the chil's put on the best live show i have ever seen! the queens of the stone age were good aswel ... and electric six put on a surprisingly grrr8 show 2... as for PJ Harvey and the distillers ... ive seen more entertaining ants!!!

Hi

I thought it was an amazing day, apart from getting shouted at by the security firm, Rock Steady, (they were really crabbit). Anyway, weather was brill and made all the difference. I thought the Foo Fighters and the Chilis were both outstanding, PJ Harvey - why did she even bother getting out of bed?, The Distillers, - re the lead singer - they’re model’s legs, but are they women’s or are they men’s? Electric Six, I was very surprised with them, good band and the lead singer was funny with his waving at the crowd. Qotsa - The jury is out.

Anthony Kiedis is just adorable but I was disappointed that he didn’t talk to the crowd. If my memory is right, only Flea spoke to the crowd and he said ‘If you are a girl, less then 7 years of age, in a white T-shirt, with blonde hair and your sitting on someone’s shoulder’s, your beautiful – thanks for coming.’ Sweet.

queens fucking rocked. foos were immense. everlong and my hero, i never wanted them to leave, until it got dark then the chilis rocked for 90 minutes. and they played old stuff like i could have lied, suck my kiss etc. those who paid money to listen to californication and by the way tunes deserved to sit with the 5 year olds i saw wandering round the pit with their parents. blood sugar and mothers milk songs for chrissakes! whats the matter with you newbie chili fans? all they needed was dave navarro and i would have died. and they played police helicopter! jesus!

Drove up from Scarborough setting off at 5am with my kids. What a great day!!!!! RHCPs were what I went for and they did'nt disappoint. The whole day was amazing though PJ Harvey looked as though she wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible and had left her personality behind some where.
p.s. I'm 46 and found this site looking to see if there are any plans yet for a Big Day Out 2004!!

Posted by: Sue at December 10, 2003 08:19 PM

Big Day Out was amazing. I was at the front behind the barrier thingy. Behind all the snooty people(the VIPs in that wee bit)
I was pressed right against the barrier at the right of the stage. I went there just before the distillers came on and never moved till the chilis came off, best gig of my life. I even shook hands with the electric six bassist!!!!

Posted by: Alexander Brown at December 14, 2003 07:20 PM

Big Day Out was so awesome :D I had such a fecking great time, does anyone remember that little tree just near where the crowds were? That was such a life saver that tree, i love it. And all the food etc was pretty gross anda rip off but, hey.. The rides etc were cool :D

Anyways, the music. I thought by far the Chillies owned the day although by that point I thought I was about ready to fall down and die cause I was so exhausted. So in order of best to shittest it would have to be;

RHCP
Foo Fighters
QOTSA
Eletric Six
The Distillers
Pj Harvey (I only watched like half that set from The Tree and then i went off to get mroe cash from the 300hours queue to the cash machine and had to SPRINT to the QOTSA set..)

Overall it was great and the weather was good cept during the QOTSA set where it got incredibly hot and I couldnt get out cause I was at the very front at the barrier and had to get water from the Rock Steady ppl.)

And if you go on www.virtualfestivals.com theres a bunch of great photos (You cant see me in them, but the ones of the crowd are taken RIGHT above my head, the camera was touching my gorehead [that asshole photographer Iain Kerr..])

I went with my mum, my uncle ,my aunty nicky and their friend called simon, who was really cool!
it was the funniest and the best day of my life !!
but there was bad thing aswell we had to get to bristol airport at about 7 o'clock in the morning from wiltshire.
the funniest things were during and after the RHCP'S setbecause a totaly pissed man (scotish!)
started dancing with everyone arround us !! and wen he fell over onto some posh woman's bag and he stayed there. Then the posh woman and her posh husband pulled the bag from underneath him and hishead smaced on the ground, he stayed there!!!
and when we were leaving we all linked arms and walked out of the park colect rubbish like a rubbish pough as we went !!
the rubbish included bog roll, pint cans, and everything else u can image
and the 40 year old having sex in the porta loo's was pretty sick aswell !
if any1 (girls) read this from the hotel in glasgow i think it was called ???
i saw the girls @ btreakfast plz write a mess bk

i know its a long time since bdo, but can i just say, i went as a foos fan. distillers werent very good but i didnt know any of their music and no one had turned up yet so id give em another chance. electric six, just funny, every1 was just waitin on them to play the 2 hits, gay bar got the crowd really goin too. now, qotsa, id heard quite a few of their songs, i know sum of u said they sucked, but im sure a lot of u hardly knew any of their songs. i thought they were unbelievable, for a band to pull off a performance like that, especially when half the crowd dont look interested, soon as i came home, next day, got everythin by qotsa, and i now absolutely love em....now, like i said, foos die hard fan, but, i know its a festival, but they just pld all the obvious ones, and, have it all went on for bout 15 minutes, surely they cudve got a few songs in there. anyway, the songs they did play, amazin as usual, only reason i aint rantin bout it is cos i knew they wud be. ive never really liked rhcp but have 2 admit, they were brilliant. id have 2 say, as for atmosphere etc. the best songs of the night were

qotsa - no one knows(every1 singin along to riff!)
foos - all my life(such an amazin opener)
electric six - gay bar
rhcp - parallel universe

im sure a lot of u will disagree with me bout qotsa, aint ur kind of music, but, it wasnt my kinda music either, oh and can i just say, bdo was my 2nd best gig ever, i suggest u all go see the strokes, corn exchange march 02, AMAZING!

i went to!quality day but had to travel 400miles on a shitty little 14seater bus!had to leave at 5am,i think, and i didnt get much sleep!i am a big fan of the distillers but was really disappionted as they sucked, they jst werent appriavhiated much and i dont think the crpwd were entirely ready for them. having never heard pj harvey b4, i wasnt aware of who they were but found them to be, well lets say, a little, plain.QOTSA were so-so and i was pleasantly blown away by electric6!highlight of the day was the chilis and the foos.got a gr8 view of antony at the front, but low piont was the toilets.was i the only person who realised that the surrounding 'water' was piss!as the toilets had overflown!the long queue soon disappeared when i shouted out that it was piss.then i dropped my bfen, eh!got home at bout 3am, went to bed at 5am, and planned to go to school the next day, but thought better of it, although 10 of my other friends thought i was going so they all went instead!fools!
