Am I just being stupid or should the onus of proof not be on the Daily Mirror and Piers Morgan to prove the veracity of the photos? It's not acceptable for them to magic up some photos, print them and have third parties suffer the consequences even when it has become clear that the whole thing was bogus.
The longer the impasse goes on, the more credibility leaks from the veracity of reporting. The rest of the press should be routing out those who give the whole industry a bad name and in so doing harm democracy. Then people can move on like the BBC did after Gilligan and the NYT did after Jayson Blair.
[Update (8th March '05)]: Morgan's autobiography of a scandalous decade is out now.
