Our lease on this lovely flat in the West End of Edinburgh runs out at the end of this month. I've been too busy/lazy to organise anything else yet so today I bought the appropriate newspapers with listings, got a pen and sat down to find a two bedroom flat within walking distance of pubs, uni, gym, railway station. Also checked with the rental property agents to see if they had anything interesting. First one I found sounds perfect, not too expensive and central so I called up. I'm going to see it tomorrow and I really hope it is perfect because I really cannot be bothered to go see hundreds of apartments. I'll report back. But now I have to think what's important. So we're going to need three columns, perfection, acceptable and unacceptable...
Perfection | Acceptable | Unacceptable |
Central location, West End, Broughton, New Town, Stockbridge. | Newington, Marchmont, Bruntsfield | Sighthill, Wester Hailes etc. |
Laundry Facilities (Washer-dryer) | At least a washer. | There's a laundrette four blocks away. |
Power Shower (not in the bath) | Okay Shower that works. | I hate baths. |
Nice modern (read plain) decor. | Unoffensive colours | Woodchip or other textured nonsense. |
Cale TV Hookup | Broadband-able | No fast net connection (or a significant delay in getting one) |
Good range of bars and restaurants nearby to include one perfect bar. | Okay selection of pubs, Chain restaurants | Wetherspoons and MacDonalds |
Good selection of new & used book shops | At least one good bookshop within 10 minutes walk | There's a WHSmith on the corner that sells Danielle Steel and John Grisham |
Roof Garden | I'm not going to be fussy on this, a roof garden is pretty unlikely. | |
Top Floor / Penthouse | 2nd or 3rd Floors | Ground Floor where people walk by and look in |
Good sized Kitchen with Mod Cons | Okay Kitchen, Cooker, Fridge, Freezer etc. | Kitchen like in old flat which was no bigger than a matchbox and was made of old wood found by owner on the beach or somewhere. He then laminated it all green. |
Local & National Public Transport Links on doorstep (not literally, but closeby) | Local Bus Svc. nearby | Need to get a car |
